HVAC Prototype Assembly Evaluation and Failure Analysis - by Touchstone Research Laboratory
An automotive company hired Touchstone to test a prototype the corrosion resistance of a new HVAC assembly.
The complete HVAC assemblies were tested in salt fog to determine corrosion resistance of the evaporator cores.
It was found that assembled evaporator cores which were installed within the entire HVAC assemble were less resistant to salt fog than evaporators tested outside the HVAC units.
A failure investigation found that a cavity within the assembly that tended to collect the corrosive media which submerged part of the evaporator core reducing its life.
This problem was corrected before the prototype was put into production.
