LIFE TESTING
Salt Spray (Fog) Testing (ASTM B 117)
Touchstone has several salt spray cabinets and can conduct both standard and customized testing.
Salt Spray (Salt Fog) Testing is performed under ASTM Test Method
B 117. A 5% salt water solution in a pH range of 6.5 - 7.2 is atomized
as a fog into the heated cabinet maintained at 95° F (35°
C). The duration of the test is typically 100 to 2000 hours. Samples
and solutions are checked at intervals specified by the customer
or recommended by Touchstone Engineers. This test is used primarily
to compare the corrosion resistance of painted or metal coated samples.
Touchstone has tested both coupons and entire components for automotive,
aerospace, and other industries. If you are interested in coupon testing,
we can prepare and coat the edges, to eliminate edge corrosion.
Test time ranges from 24 to thousands of hours, usually in 24 hour increments.
We can recommend a test length, and also an inspection frequency. Panels can be regularly inspected, and then
removed based on an inspection/failure criteria. We have several
cabinets that can run different salt spray tests.
In addition to ASTM B117, Touchstone performs other corrosion testing
such as SWAAT or CASS testing. We can also conduct tests to third party specifications in
the aerospace, military, or automotive areas such as General Motors GM Salt Spray corrosion testing
specification GM4298P.
Consulting on corrosion problems is also available. Our light microscopy,
metallography, and mechanical testing laboratories can provide a full suite of
tests to support your material characterization program.
Touchstone is conveniently located on Interstate Route 70, between Pittsburgh, PA and Columbus, OH.
