MECHANICAL TESTING
Thermomechanical Fatigue Testing – ASTM E2368
The ATSM E2368 test determines the thermomechanical fatigue (TMF) properties of a uniaxially loaded, strain-controlled material. It does this by tension or compression loading a specimen while the thermal conditions cycle through preset minimum and maximum temperatures. These temperatures can be determined by the customer or the Touchstone engineer.
A "thermomechanical" fatigue cycle is defined here where uniform temperature and strain fields over the specimen gage section are simultaneously varied and independently controlled. This cycle can be specified for either tension or compression testing.
For more accurate test results, the specimens used in this procedure are usually tubular rather than solid. This is because the decrease in mass reduces the potential for unwanted radial temperature gradients during testing.
This test can be used for materials research and development, mechanical design, process and quality control, product performance, and failure analysis.
