 MECHANICAL TESTING
Double Shear - Aluminum
Shear Testing of Aluminum Alloys - ASTM B769
The ASTM B769 test method provides ultimate shear strength of aluminum-alloy wrought and cast products. The loading device is a double-shear fixture design capable of specimen diameters of 0.1875 in (4.76 mm), 0.375 in (9.52 mm) and 0.5 in (12.7 mm). The test fixture complies with Section 6 of ASTM B 769 with a center die length of 1 in (25.4 mm).
Double shear fixtures are commercially available to 650ºF (343ºC) at 11 kip (50 kN), but Touchstone Engineers have designed a fixture that can test up to 1000ºF (538ºC) at 22 kip (100 kN). The fixture is constructed with high strength, high corrosion-resistant hardened steel dies. The fixture was designed to keep the center die accurately on the load centerline even after the dies have been sharpened.
In addition to the capability of mechanical testing of aluminum alloys, Touchstone can conduct complete metallurgical and/or failure analysis using its laboratories for light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and metallography.
