Shear Properties of Composite Materials by the V-Notched Beam Method - ASTM D5379 (Iosipescu Shear)

ASTM D5379 determines the shear properties of composite materials that are reinforced by high-modulus fibers. The materials are either continuous-fiber or discontinuous-fiber-reinforced composites. To conduct this test a rectangular flat strip composite material coupon is symmetrically v-notched. The sample preparation, including notching, can be done at your facility or ours. Strain gages are applied to both sides of the coupon. A special fixture is used to hold the coupon and load is applied at a customer or Touchstone specified rate until failure occurs. Touchstone has extensive experience in utilizing different coupon geometries, the use of different tab materials and adhesives, and proper preparation of notches, all of which are critical to ensure accurate results. Results can include shear stress/ultimate strength, shear strain/ultimate strain, shear chord modulus of elasticity, and offset shear strength. ASTM D5379 is also commonly referred to as an Iosipescu Shear Test.
