MECHANICAL TESTING
Tensile Testing of Polymer Matrix Composites - ASTM D 3039

ASTM D3039 covers the determination of the tensile properties of
resin-matrix composites reinforced by oriented continuous or discontinuous
high-modulus greater than 20 GPa (>3X10^6 psi) fibers.
This test determines in-plane tensile properties of polymer matrix composite (PMC) materials
reinforced by high-modulus fibers. Composite material forms are limited to continuous-fiber
or discontinuous-fiber reinforced composites where the laminate is balanced and symmetric
with respect to the test direction.
Touchstone engineers are experienced in specimen preparation and tabbing (which are key to
accurate results) for ASTM D3039 and many other test methods.
A tensile specimen is mounted in the grips of the testing machine.
Usually, load deformation or load strain curves are plotted or digitally
collected during the test for the determination of the elastic modulus.
