MECHANICAL TESTING
Tensile Testing of Metal Matrix Composites - ASTM D 3552
"Standard Test Method for Tensile Properties of Fiber-Reinforced
Metal Matrix Composites"
ASTM D3552 covers the determination of the tensile properties of
metal-matrix composites reinforced by continuous and discontinuous
high-modulus fibers. This method applies to specimens tested in
a direction of reinforcement or perpendicular to the direction of
reinforcement.
A tension specimen is mounted in suitable grips of a test machine
and a load is applied at approximately constant crosshead rate until
specimen failure occurs. When possible, the load-deformation or
load-strain curve is plotted either manually or automatically, to
determine elastic moduli and other tensile properties (proportional
limit, fracture strain, etc.), as well as the ultimate tensile strength.
Touchstone has performed thousands of such tests on metal matrix
composites in support of numerous metal matrix composite development
programs. In addition to this test, Touchstone has developed hundreds
of other materials characterization tests related specifically to
metal matrix.
