MECHANICAL TESTING LABORATORY

Due to the very large number of tests offered, descriptions of those most commonly requested have been gathered into the following groups:

ASTM E23 – Notched Bar Impact Testing of Metallic Materials

To request a quotation for any test email info@trl.com for a prompt reply

The ASTM E23 method describes the Charpy (simple beam) testing and the Izod (cantilever-beam) testing of notched-bar impact testing of metallic materials which determines the energy absorbed by the material during fracture. Testing may be performed at a variety of temperatures. The absorbed energy in a measure of the material’s toughness and may be used to study the changes in energy absorbed at fracture at various temperatures

The properties determined by this test relate specifically to the behavior of the metal when subjected to a single application of force resulting in multi-axial stresses associated with a notch. When correlated with service experience, this may predict the likelihood of brittle fracture.
