MECHANICAL TESTING LABORATORY

Due to the very large number of tests offered, descriptions of those most commonly requested have been gathered into the following groups:

ASTM C297 – Flatwise Tensile Strength of Sandwich Constructions

To request a quotation for any test email info@trl.com for a prompt reply

ASTM C297 is in Touchstone’s NADCAP and ISO 17025 scope.

ASTM C297 testing determines the flatwise tensile strength of the core, core-to-facing bond, or the facing on an assembled sandwich panel. Permissible core materials include those with a continuous bonding surface (balsa wood and foams) as well as those with a discontinuous bonding surface (honeycomb).

A sandwich construction is subjected to a uniaxial tensile force normal to the plane of the sandwich. The force is transmitted to the sandwich through loading blocks that are bonded to the surface facings or to the core.

Core-to-facing bond integrity is necessary to maintain facing stability and permit load transfer between the facings and the core. Results from testing can be used to provide information on the strength and quality of core-to-facing bonds. Results may also provide information on flatwise tensile strength data of the core material.
